The 2012 South Florida Jazz Summit

The South Florida Jazz Summit is a fundraising event produced annually by the Jazz Museum of Florida, Inc (dba Jazzonian), a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. All proceeds from this event go to the Jazzonian Young Jazz Leaders Scholarship initiative and community outreach jazz education programs under the aegis of the Jazz Museum of Florida, Inc.

The Bienes Center for the Arts is offering a special discount to anyone who attends the Jazz Summit - take $5 off per ticket to any of their "January Jazz" concerts, which includes January 13 - Troy Anderson and the Wonderful World Big Bands "A Tribute to Louis Armstrong",  January 21 - The Perry Joslin Project,  and January 27 - Academy Award Nominee DANNY AIELLO and his Swinging Jazz Band. Known as one of the most versatile voices in Latin America and now North America, Maria Rivas skillfully combines American and Latin Jazz rhythms with lively yet sentimental music from around the world.  She interprets her music in English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese, and performs her own blend of traditional standards as well as music and lyrics she has composed herself.

Concert/Lecture featuring: Joan Cartwright, (vocals, Executive Director, Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc); Roberta DeMuro (piano); Renee Fiallos (flute/voice)

Amazing Musicwomen is an historical lecture with songs, photographs and artwork that chronicle the lives of women who wrote and performed blues and jazz music, including Gertrude "Ma" Rainey, Bessie Smith, Alberta Hunter, Ethel Waters, Lil Harding Armstrong, Mary Lou Williams, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, and others. Concert selections include compositions of Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Billie Holiday, Cole Porter, Norman Mapp, and others.

2012 SFJS Celebrates Louis Armstrong
The 2012 SFJS will celebrate the music of Louis Armstrong. Nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, Louis Armstrong was an American Jazz trumpeter and singer from New Orleans, Louisiana. Coming to prominence in the 1920s as an "inventive" cornet and trumpet player, Armstrong was a foundational influence in jazz, shifting the music's focus from collective improvisation to solo performance.

Founded in 2009 as an educational cultural arts museum initiative by musician/philanthropist Bobby Ramirez, Jazz Museum of Florida, Inc (dba Jazzonian and South Florida Jazz Summit) is a non-profit 501c3 public charity organization based in South Florida.

The mission of Jazzonian is to celebrate Jazz heritage, collect, document, preserve and present the rich Jazz traditions from its origins to modern-day variations through a permanent museum, virtual online and traveling art/photo/film and artifacts exhibitions, historical archives, recordings, literature, audio/visual experiences, interactive cultural education programs, live musical performances and special events for children and adults.
